Indian Chief

1947 Indian Chief Museum Piece

The 1947 Indian Chief is one of the most iconic American motorcycles ever produced and remains one of the most sought-after models among collectors. Introduced as Indian Motorcycle’s flagship touring machine, the Chief became renowned for its powerful 74 cubic inch (1,205cc) flathead V-twin engine, unmistakable valanced fenders and timeless Art Deco-inspired styling. Produced in the immediate post-war years, the 1947 model represents the golden era of Indian Motorcycle and is celebrated for combining classic design with comfortable long-distance touring performance.

This restored example is presented in an attractive yellow and cream colour scheme and displays 36 miles on the odometer. Engine No. CDG6375B.

The Indian Chief first appeared in 1922 and quickly established itself as one of America’s premier motorcycles. By 1947, it had evolved into a refined touring machine featuring Indian’s distinctive full valanced fenders, sprung saddle, plunger rear suspension and robust side-valve V-twin engine. These defining characteristics have made the post-war Chief one of the most recognisable and desirable vintage motorcycles in the world.

Today, the 1947 Indian Chief is admired not only for its engineering and craftsmanship, but also for its enduring place in motorcycling history. Whether destined for display in a significant collection, participation in historic motorcycle events or careful enjoyment on the open road, this beautifully restored example represents a rare opportunity to acquire a true piece of American motorcycling heritage.
