It’s easy to be drawn to the sparkle of a diamond ring or the shine of a gold bracelet. But when you look beyond the surface and consider how materials for the jewellery is sourced, buying pre-owned pieces becomes an even more attractive option.
The extraction of precious metals and gemstones can require significant resources, making jewellery one of the categories where reuse and recycling can have a meaningful impact. Gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, and coloured gemstones can be enjoyed and appreciated for generations, often changing hands many times throughout their lifetime.
Giving Jewellery a Second Life
Choosing pre-loved jewellery allows beautiful pieces to remain in circulation rather than sitting unworn in a drawer. Many estate, antique, and vintage pieces also offer a level of craftsmanship, character, and individuality that can be difficult to find in modern mass-produced jewellery.
How Auctions Keep Jewellery in Circulation
Auctions play an important role in keeping these pieces in use. They connect sellers who no longer wear or need their jewellery with buyers who will appreciate and enjoy it for years to come. Whether the jewellery comes from a family estate, a private collection, or simply a change in personal style, auction provides an opportunity for each piece to find a new home.
A New Chapter for a Pair of Cufflinks
One such story occurred at Abbeys during our June 2026 Fine Jewellery Auction. A regular Abbeys customer discovered two sets of cufflinks that immediately caught her attention. Looking for meaningful gifts for her brothers, an accountant and a builder, she felt they were the perfect match. One set featured a pair of abacuses (ancient Chinese calculators), making them ideal for her accountant brother. The other depicted symbols of good luck, which she felt suited her builder brother perfectly.

While the cufflinks had previously belonged to someone else, the auction gave them a new purpose and a new story. Rather than remaining unworn, they found their way to a new owner who saw both their practicality and their character. What was once part of one collection became a thoughtful gift that will be appreciated and worn for years to come.
More Than Buying and Selling
Stories like this are a reminder that auctions are about more than simply buying and selling. They create opportunities for well-made and cherished items to continue their journey, finding new owners who value them just as much as the previous ones did.
Discover Jewellery at Abbeys Auctions
At Abbeys Auctions, jewellery regularly features across a range of sales, including our Weekly Estates Auctions, & Classics Collection Auctions, and our Fine Jewellery Auctions, which are now held monthly. These auctions offer buyers access to a diverse range of rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, gemstones, cufflinks, and other unique pieces, while helping sellers realise the value of items they no longer wear.
Buying jewellery at auction isn’t just a great way to discover quality pieces and exceptional value, it’s also a practical way to support a more sustainable approach to ownership by giving existing pieces a new life.
