1981 Harley Davidson Custom-built Shovel Head

Shovelhead
Shovelhead hero

The 1981 Harley Davidson Shovelhead is a custom-built masterpiece with a 93 inch Sidewinder motor, 4 speed custom transmission and painted ‘Kamillion Green’.  The following information was provided and published in Heavy Duty Magazine:

“The tinware comprises a heavily modded and stretched Ness fuel tank, ably massaged by ace tin man, Bernie Willet, while the rear guard is the work of HDD’s ‘Wheels’ Garner. Metzeler rubber – a massive 200mm wide tyre on the rear and 21-inch diameter on the front – wrap around quality Akront alloy rims, with some very serious brakes in the form of a pair of 6-piston PM calipers and 13-inch floating discs on the front, backed up by a similar 4-piston gripped set-up on the rear. The Wide Glide front end features special Race Tech Gold Valve damper cartridges from Promecha and a set of slim looking Kennedy triple trees.

SandS crankshaft swings a pair of H-D ‘rods underneath a pair of ported and polished heads, which are kept busy by an Andrews B grind cam, Jim’s alloy lifters and SandS pushrods lurking inside a set of Ness pushrod tubes. Black Diamond valves and Andrews springs keep things moving when Bob grabs a handful. A Crane single-fire ignition sparks the mixture, which pours in via an SandS Super E carby and exits through a pair of barely muffled HDD pipes. Ensuring the power gets reliably to the ratchet-lid four-speed is a beefy Primo 3-inch belt drive hooked up to a Barnett Kevlar clutch. RevTech supplied the ‘box internals, with a heavy duty Tech Products starter rigged up properly by Melbourne Harley engineering guru, John Trease. Winner of Best Shovel at the Heavy Duty Custom Bike Show – The previous owner reckons riding a real hardtail takes a bit of getting used to, although lowering the rear tyre pressure from 20 to 8 psi softened the ride a tad. He says riding a big-inch hardtail hard needs serious concentration. “I’ve found the limit and I’m not going back there!”  He had a couple of wise words on the subject of custom bike building after four years putting his knockout bike together. In these days of slick, store-bought customs, he reckons the key to putting together a top bike is to keep it simple. “With all the choices around for bits and pieces, the hardest part was not putting stuff on the bike,” said the owner of this show-stoppin’ Shovel.”
