Rare ‘Amazonas’ Brazilian Rosewood mid-century furniture in online auction

June’s Collectables and Classics online auction features a ‘once every 10 years’ example of beautiful Rosewood mid-century furniture. The sling sofa and armchairs are the creation of Jean Gillon of Italma Wood Art in Brazil.

Jean Gillon was a Romanian-born, naturalised Brazilian architect-designer who founded his furniture design company in 1961. By the mid-1960s, Gillon’s designs could be found all around Brazil but it wasn’t until 1964 that he expanded into the international market. He received international recognition for many of his designs, some years after they were originally created. Gillon continued to produce furniture until he retired in 2003 and passed away in 2007.

It’s not often that we come across such a rare piece of furniture in such pristine condition. The Amazonas style features a solid Brazilian rosewood frame, Brazilian leather and netted rope. It is understood that the design was inspired by local fishermen.

Visit Abbeys Auctions before the Collectables and Classics auction on 19 June to view this remarkable Rosewood mid-century furniture in person.
